A former Olympic ice skater has been charged with defrauding the United States government of $1.5 million, the Department of Justice announced on Tuesday.

By falsifying documents and misrepresenting his finances, the US Attorney says, Mr Klasinc bilked the US Small Business Administration out of $1,595,800 – until he got caught.

German Government Raises 2021 Economic Growth Forecast | Business News

By DAVID RISING, Associated Press

BERLIN (AP) — Germany is raising its economic growth forecast for the year on the expectation of the gradual lifting of coronavirus restrictions and an anticipated rise in domestic spending, the economy minister said Tuesday.

Peter Altmaier said gross domestic product is expected to increase 3.5% in 2021 now, up from a previous forecast of 3%, and that it should grow 3.6% in 2022.

He said that the government’s “comprehensive and quick support” for businesses had paved the way for a return to pre-pandemic levels by next year for Europe’s largest economy.

“Our economy is strong, robust and ready for a new start,” he said.

Last year, Germany’s gross domestic product shrank by 4.9%. That ended a decade of growth and was the biggest decline since the financial crisis in 2009.

It did better than several others in the 19-country eurozone, however, as it was

Government offers firms new grants to survive lockdown

Businesses in retail, hospitality and leisure will receive new grants to help them keep afloat until spring, Chancellor Rishi Sunak has said.

The grants will be worth up to £9,000 per property, the Treasury says.

Mr Sunak told the BBC he was “committed to protecting jobs and supporting businesses”.

Business groups welcomed the new help as a good start but warned the money still wouldn’t be enough to save many firms from collapse.

The help is in addition to business rates relief and the furlough scheme, which has been extended until the end of April.

Firms do not have to pay the grant money back.

Mr Sunak said he would consider whether or how to extend support packages in its Budget on 3 March.

“The Budget early in March is an excellent opportunity to take stock of the range of support we have put in place and set out
