AVON — Town Administrator Gregory S. Enos is pleased to announce that the Town of Avon is preparing to launch a new app that will allow residents to keep track of a variety of business and economic services in town.

The app, Discover Avon MA, will feature a comprehensive listing of important information relating to the town, such as a business directory, event listings, recreational opportunities, up-to-date news and things residents need to know about town government services and offerings.

It is now available for download from the Apple Store and Google Play. There is no cost for the app.

The app is being funded by a $71,000 grant from the Massachusetts Office of Business Development’s Local Pilot Project, which was awarded to the Old Colony Planning Council. OCPC represents 17 municipalities in the region, including Avon. The communities of Easton, Brockton and Stoughton have also developed an app as part of this grant.

The grant is part of a larger effort by the state to assist municipalities’ relief efforts due to COVID-19, such as promoting local businesses and restaurants (including a push for residents to “Buy Local”), cultural and recreational highlights and more. It allows towns the ability to share these features in an easy-to-navigate digital format that can be used by anyone with a compatible cell phone.

“Our local businesses and restaurants, like all those throughout the state and the country, faced an uphill battle during the pandemic and we will continue to support them in whatever way we can,” Town Administrator Enos said. “We hope that residents will download this new app as a way to keep track of local shopping and dining opportunities as well as other important information relating to Town services.”

The Town will soon be promoting the app through signs, flyers and banners hung outside local businesses that highlight some of the businesses throughout Avon.
