Lawrence Tech Debuts Bachelors and Master’s Degrees in Business Analytics

In an effort to provide students with as many educational and career options as possible, Southfield’s Lawrence Technological University (LTU) now is offering a new bachelors and master’s degree program in business analytics.

Business analytics is the ability to process raw data through data mining, data cleansing, data transformation, data modeling, and more. Recent studies show the exponential growth of the amount of data coming into businesses in recent years, opening up many opportunities for students in the field of business analytics within just the next decade. The classes required to earn the degree will be offered in person, online, and in hybrid options.

LTU’s College of Business and Informational Technology will offer students the various skills and training needed in the field of business analytics including a wide variety of machine learning skills to be able to create, design, and change different types of code and data sets. Students will be able to apply what they have learned in the classroom to all sorts of industries, including finance, healthcare, engineering, and technology.

Business analytic jobs are expected to rise 11 percent through 2029 according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. An example of a specific job in the field of business analytics is operation research analyst. According to government analysts, there is an expected increase of 29 percent for this position through 2029 and an expected salary of $86,200.

“The curricula for both degree programs have been designed with very significant feedback from data analytics professionals and the College of Business and Information Technology Industry Advisory Board,” says Tarek Sobh, provost at LTU. “Graduates of the programs will be able to analyze numeric data and use it to help companies make better business decisions. They will also be involved in preparing data, in addition to coding, developing, constructing, testing, and maintaining complete architectures for data visualization and interpretation.”

Throughout the program, students will be equipped with the knowledge and skills for data-intensive problem solving. Faculty will train students to effectively define business analytics and how to apply that knowledge to expose and the dissemination of large amount of data. While students are in enrolled in the program, they will have access to LTU’s career placement services.

Throughout the bachelors program, classes will consist of business analytics courses along with foundational courses. First years will go through classes involving management, mathematics, composition, and marketing, with an introductory course in data analytics.

Sophomores will be introduced to more courses relating to business analytics such as statistics, accounting, and computer programming but will still be required to take foundational courses in natural sciences and history. Juniors will then study more advanced classes such as business law, machine learning, financial management, computer networking, cybersecurity, and data mining. Finally, senior student’s classes will consist of business analytics, including operations management, project management, and database systems.

The master’s program offered by LTU will involve large projects that require students to solve and take on large amounts of data. Partnered with faculty, the students will learn critical thinking skills that relate to defining, analyzing, and managing the large data sets they will have to work on.
